Balurghat is a beautiful city and headquarters of Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal. The town is situated in the lap of Mother Nature, surrounded by forests and greenery the beauty of the town, serene and pollution free air attracts tourists to the place. This small town is just 25 km away from Hili which is well known for its landscapes and is a border town between India and Bangladesh. This town is also famous and has a special place in the history of India because of the special role played by it in August Movement 1942. River Atrayee adds to the beauty of the town.

The Main Attractions of Balurghat

Raghunathpur Forest - This is a famous picnic spot of Balurghat. Many adventure trips are planned in the forest. The forest department Bunglow is available on prior booking if one plans to stay in this forest for a night.

College Museum - This museum is a must visit for the people interested in history and archaeology. This museum will give your mind a nice walk in the lanes of past. The museum is located in the premises of Balurghat College.  Many unique artefacts of ancient times can be seen here. Sculptures, inscriptions, coins, ornamental stones and terracotta items are on display in this museum. This museum is the main centre of attraction of the town.

The inscriptions present here dates back to the 11th Century of Nayapala from Gangarpur. Some antiques such as ornamental stones, coins and other artefacts belong to the era of ‘Pala dynasty’. Two important inscriptions interpreted reveals the religious beliefs of those era.

Dogachhi Forest - This is another forest area and a popular picnic spot of the town. There is also Zig Zug canal in this forest which offers the boating facility which is enjoyed by locals and tourists.

Hili -
Known for its beautiful Landscapes and Sceneries, Hili is a small place at just 25 kms from Balurghat near India Bangladesh Border.

Sarongbari -
This is again a forest area near Balurghat, about 20 kms from the city. Sarongbari is popular as a picnic spot, there is a fresh drinking water supply and a small hut for the visitors.

Bolla Kali Temple -
This temple is devoted to one of the face of ‘Shakti’, ‘Kali’. It is located on road to Malda from Balurghat and is approximately 20 Km from the city. The temple has large number of devotees and is famous for its legendary powers. There is an interesting story behind this temple of Goddess Kali; A Zamindar was arrested by British for not paying his taxes. Zamindar was abeliever of Goddess Kali, who came to his rescue and Zamindar was freed the very next day. Out of his gratitude Zamindar built this Temple and worshiped Goddess Kali here.

Presently a big Puja is conducted here every Friday after ‘Rash Purnima’, a mela or fair is also organised for three days here. Thousands of devotees visit this temple from all over the district during this auspicious time.

Tapan Dighi -
‘Dighi’ means Lake and ‘Tapan’ is the name of the place where this lake is situated. This is a huge lake and is believed to be there since ages. It is believed that the lake was dug by a King, Laxman Sen in order to offer ‘Tarpan’ (Hindu ritual) to his ancestors. On the northern side of this lake a mound is located which is believed to be there since the time of Lord Buddha. This lake is 35 Km from Balurghat. The length and breadth of the lake are 2 km and 1 km respectively.

Bangarh -
Located at about 45 Km from Balurghat, Bangarh is an important historical place. During excavation numerous relics related to Gupta and Mauraya period were discovered here.
Bangarh, according to legends was a capital of Koti Barsha district in PundraVardhana Bhukti Pradesh now known as North Bengal. Some of the important things unearthed from the place includes 11th Century manuscript of King Naipala, pillars of a Vishnu temple, statue of century, walls of buildings and other small things.

Khanpur -
This place is about 18 km from Balurghat on Trimohini Patiram road. The place is famous for its Tebhaga Movement, which took place in 1946. Sharecroppers raised the movement in order to establish the share of 75% in the crops they produced in the field of their Landlords or Zamindars.
Pritam Thakur Estate – This is an old building of a local landlord, on the banks of Atrayee river and on Balurghat Malda state highway. The building also bears memories of Tagore Family.

Balurghat Station

By Air:
Balurghat has its own Airport but it is currently not operational. The nearest Airport from Balurghat is in the State of Assam; Rupsi Airport (170 Km). Other nearby Airports are;  Bagdogra Airport ( 187 Km) and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport (325 Km).

By Rail:
Balurghat Railway station is on the banks of River Atrayee and town and Station are on opposite banks of the river. The bridge links the Railway Station and the city of Balurghat. However major railway station is at Malda town, Malda Railway Station, which is 77 Km from Balurghat.

By Road:
Balurghat is well connected to all the major cities around like Siliguri (290 Km), Malda (145 Km), Kolkata and Raiganj (105 Km) etc.
